Apparently, there was a lot more going on at the recent Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics than just winning medals and gaining Olympic glory. Besides all the official Olympic medal events, there is an unofficial event that involves a lots and lots of scoring. What I am referring to is the Olympic sized sexual appetites of the athletes and officials who are staying at the athlete’s village.

During the recent Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics officials had handed out 100,000 free condoms to the roughly 7,000 athletes and officials staying at the athlete’s village. This works out to about 14 condoms per person. Unfortunately the athlete’s village ran out of the prophylactics on Day 13 of the event, forcing officials to bring in emergency supplies. Go figure!

Since this is quite an intriguing statistic I’d do a bit of research on Olympic sex. Apparently, the Olympic sex phenomenon requires special planning on the part of the International Olympic Committee to accommodate it at every Olympics. I found a few really interesting articles that explain the intricacies of Olympic sex in more detail. You can check out these articles below:

Olympics and Sex: Athletes at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games

Sex, Olympics go hand in hand

Sex and the Olympic City

Sex at the Olympics sure gives a new meaning to the Olympic motto of “Swifter, Higher, Stronger!”

Here is an amusing story about a couple in the United Kingdom who have been charged for making excessive noise during sex:

Woman claims order banning her from noisy sex is breach of human rights – By the Telegraph, Nov 9th, 2009

Caroline and Steve Cartwright’s love making was described as ”murder” and ”unnatural” and drowned out their neighbours’ televisions.

Even the local postman and a woman, who walked past the house taking her child to school, complained and she was given a noise abatement order.

Now Mrs Cartwright is appealing a conviction by magistrates for breaching a noise abatement notice that banned the couple from ‘’shouting, screaming or vocalisation at such a level as to be a statutory nuisance”.

She is using Article 8 of the Human Rights Act to argue that she has a right to ”respect for her private and family life”.

Mrs Cartwright, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, is also arguing that she cannot help making the noise and has instructed a sexual psychologist to give evidence on her behalf.

Rachel O’Connor, a neighbour, said she was frequently late for work because she overslept having been awake most of the night because of the noise.

”It is not very pleasant living there and it has been quite stressful,” she told the court.

”I always feel intimidated living there. I was aware of it when I first moved in but I did not believe it would be this bad.”

Specialist equipment installed in Miss O’Connor’s flat by Sunderland City Council recorded noise levels of between 30 to 40 decibels, with the highest being 47 decibels.

Marion Dixon, an environmental health manager with the council, told the hearing what happened when the Cartwrights were confronted by the council with the neighbours’ complaints.

”Mr Cartwright held his head in his hands but Mrs Cartwright seemed to find it quite amusing,” she said.

”I told them at the time that the council found this extremely serious and was considering serving them with a noise abatement notice.

”She was adamant she could not stop the noise and had always done it.”

The case continues

Here’s another gem from one of my favorite religious bigots, Pat Robertson. Take a look at this YouTube video clip where he suggests that nations that embrace the homosexual lifestyle will end up on the garbage heap of history. If Pat Robertson ever bothered to check the historical record for himself, he would soon discover there is no truth to his claims. But then again telling the truth was never one of Pat’s strong suits.

I did some historical research on the type of claims that Pat Robertson makes and it does not take very long to figure out that they are completely baseless. If you are so inclined, you can read about my research in the following two posts:

If you enjoyed my last post on the June 30, 1952 issue of the Aeta Apostolicae Sedis, then you should enjoy this entry as well. At 474 pages in length, this document demonstrates the lengths at which the Catholic Church will go to regulate human sexuality to ensure virtually every aspect of sex is filled with guilt and shame. While, the Aeta Apostolicae Sedis reads like a legal treatise, it is filled with gems of circular reasoning. The following is an example of the circular logic the Catholic Church uses for its justification for its ban on birth control:

Summary of Conclusions

The Church is so completely committed to the doctrine that contraception is intrinsically and gravely immoral that no substantial change in this teaching is possible. It is irrevocable.

It is not easy at present to assign a technical dogmatic note to the doctrine. But it is safe to say that it is “at least definable doctrine/’ and it is very likely already taught infallibly ex iugi magisterio.

Since the doctrine is at least definable, it must be included in some way within the object of infallibility. At the minimum, therefore, it is a part of the secondary object of infallibility and may be proposed as a truth which is absolutely tenenda. And there are good, though not yet convincing, reasons for holding that this doctrine is a part of the depositum fidei and can thus be infallibly taught as credenda.

The basis for recent papal condemnations of contraception is the natural-law principle that the inherent procreative purpose, or procreative design, of the conjugal act must always be respected. This principle has always been a part of the Christian teaching on conjugal morality; hence, in this sense at least, the condemnation of even modern contraceptive techniques may be called traditional doctrine.

Now the Translation!!

The Catholic Church believes that the use of Birth Control to be so evil that you will burn in hell if you dare to use them. Since the Catholic Church thinks Birth Control is so awful it cannot possibly change its stance on the issue.

While, the Catholic Church cannot easily come up with the logic on why using Birth Control is so evil, we do figure if we tried real hard that we could come up with some very hard to understand circular logic to support our position.

Since the Catholic Church would be able to come up with at least a bit of logic on why Birth Control is evil, it goes without saying that these beliefs would be infallible and as such could be taught as the divine truth.

The Pope completely understands all aspects of natural law (he certainly understands it much better than you, or I can), and as such the Pope can clearly see that Birth Control is in contravention of natural law. Furthermore, since the Catholic Church has always believed Birth Control to be evil, that belief is thus correct and was never incorrect.

It is a remarkable piece of work complete with lots of circular logic, appeals to natural law and an invocation of infallibility. One of the astonishing things about this document (all 474 pages of it), is that there was not one single reference to the Bible in it. None, nada, zero, nothing! You would think that since the Catholic Church is supposed to be a Christian organization they would at least look at the Bible for their authority on moral matters.

However, there is one small problem should the Catholic Church decide to check their Bibles on the issue of Birth Control; they would not find any scripture condemning or banning birth control. But then again the lack of any facts or supporting data has never stopped the Catholic Church from banning something before. The Catholic Church’s ingenious approach to this kind of problem is to dream something up out of thin air, throw in a bunch of Latin mumbo jumbo to give it the aura of logic and then get the Pope to sprinkle holy water over it to give it the force of divine law.

In the real world when your facts do not support your thesis, you change your thesis and start over again. But, in the Catholic world when the facts do not support your thesis, you just make up some new facts to fit your thesis and call it good. The Catholic Church’s position on Birth Control is a classic example of how the Catholic Church makes up a bunch of gibberish to support a position that is not supported by the facts or even their very own Bibles.

I came across a fascinating official Roman Catholic publication called the Acta Apostolicae Sedis (Latin for “Acts of the Apostolic See”). The Acta Apostolicae Sedis publishes all the principal decrees, encyclical letters, decisions of Roman congregations, and notices of ecclesiastical appointments by the Holy Office.

The June 30, 1952 issue outlined many Church positions on a myriad of sexual issues. Given the Catholic Church’s reputation for sexual prudery, this document demonstrates the extreme lengths that the Catholic Church would go to regulate every aspect of sex. The following case study presented in the publication, provides a fascinating peek into how Catholic Church regulated even the tiniest of nuances surrounding birth control:

On November 30, 1921, the Bishops of Holland submitted some questions to the Holy See concerning the practice of copula dimidiate (intercourse in which there is partial (e.g., one third or one half) penetration of the vagina, with semination taking place in the vagina). Their explanatory letter showed that they were especially concerned because of the scandal given by certain confessors who were spontaneously and promiscuously recommending it to penitents desirous of avoiding more children. Furthermore, the Bishops believed the practice was not only contrary to Christian morality but was in danger of leading Catholics to onanism rather than averting them from it. It was the sort of situation which we have seen repeated in recent times in the case of amplexus reservatus (no ejaculation or orgasm by either sex during the act). Well-meaning and zealous confessors, in trying to find a solution for the birth control problems of their penitents, were acting imprudently and even erroneously in their indiscriminate recommendations of a questionable practice.

On Nov. 23, 1922 the Holy Office issued a reply, approved by Pius XI, which effectively put an end to these irregularities.

Basically the Catholic Church decreed that a man is not allowed to cum anywhere from the entrance of a woman’s vagina to half way in inside her vagina……He must cum all the way inside, no exceptions! Does this mean that every couple must keep a measuring tape handy just to make sure they do not make a mistake? What if the guy has a really small penis, what happens thenÉ

Take a read of the following article from Gloucester, England where City Council turned down a swing club application over ‘moral concerns’:

Council turns down swinger club bid - The Press Association - September, 1st, 2009

A city was saved from turning into “Sodom and Gomorrah” after a planning committee refused an application to convert a Grade II-listed building into a swingers’ club, protesters have said.

Planners had recommended an application to turn the historic New County Hotel, a 170-year-old building in Gloucester, into a private members’ sex club, complete with “fetish room for adult enjoyment”.

But Gloucester City councillors denied the application – much to the glee of a dozen or so objectors present at the meeting – on grounds that the city centre location was unsuitable and contrary to planning policy.

The planning application stated: “The private members’ club would comprise an exclusive venue for people with alternative sexual lifestyles such as gay men and women, bisexual men and women, transvestites, cross-dressers, cross-genders, variables and swingers.” And despite it being narrowly refused on planning grounds with six votes to five, those who objected saw it as a “triumph for common sense”.

Susan Johnson, who addressed the committee on behalf of those who stood against the plans, said she found the application “revolting and repugnant”.

Addressing the committee, she said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. You are the good men and women of Gloucester. Please vote against the proposal.”

After the meeting, Ms Johnson added: “I didn’t use the words Sodom and Gomorrah, but I feel that this would have been the thin end of the wedge, which would only lead to Gloucester turning into that. I’m not homophobic, but I can love people and hate their activities. I can still hate the homosexual act. And I certainly hate adultery.”

The application has increasingly courted controversy over the last few weeks, and at the beginning of the committee meeting, held at the city council offices in Gloucester Docks, a pack of “late submissions” were handed out.

The comments strongly voiced objections to the application on moral grounds – which under planning policy guidelines can not influence a decision to approve or reject plans. But many of the comments were derided as homophobic and did not win any support from the councillors, despite the final outcome.

Coun Mary Smith (L, Matson and Robinswood), who voted against the proposal to reject the application, said: “I’m absolutely appalled by some of these comments. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything so homophobic. I’m saddened to think that we’ve not moved on at all.”

_________________________________________________________________________

Susan Johnson, the leading protester of the swing club, cited the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as her principle reason for opposing the club’s application. She believes that Gloucester, a city of 125,000 people, would suffer the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah should the swing club’s application be approved. Having read through Susan’s comments, I wondered if she really knew what goes on in her own neighbourhood. To find the answer, I did a bit of research on what the good citizens of Gloucester do in their spare time and it seems they can be quite adventerous.

I logged onto www.adultfriendfinder.com, the worlds larges sex personals site, and checked the number sex ads for the City of Gloucester. This following is what I found:

13,200 men looking for women sex partner

1,728 men looking for couples sex partners

1,141 men looking for group sex partners

805 men looking for men sex partner

322 men seeking 2 men couples sex partners

546 men seeking TS/TV/TG sex partner

809 women looking for men sex partners

519 women seeking women sex partners

216 women seeking couples sex partners

132 women seeking 2 women couples sex partners

97 women seeking group sex partners

28 women seeing TS/TV/TG sex partners

200 couples seeking men sex partner

687 couples seeking women sex partner

500 couples looking for couples sex partners

167 couples seeking group sex partners

27 couples seeking TS/TV/TG sex partners

21 TS/TV/TG looking for men sex partner

35 TS/TV/TG looking for women sex partner

12 TS/TV/TG looking for group sex partners

20 TS/TV/TG looking for couples sex partners

Truth is often stranger than fiction and looking at the scale of these numbers, it appears that the citizens of Gloucester are having a lot of sinful sex. There are a total of 21,500 sex personals for a population of only 125,000, which works out to 1 sex ad for every 6 people. And remember, these are the sex personals from only one website, there are many more to chose from. I doubt Susan Johnson truly realizes the scale of ’sinning’ going on in Gloucester, because if she did, she should probably reconsider her place of residence. You may never know when fire and brimstone will start raining down on your sinful city! Someone should also remind her not to look back as she is leaving town.

While, Christian Fundamentalists, like Susan Johnson, will often threaten their opponents with Sodom and Gomorrah like destruction, there is not a single shred of evidence to suggest that swinging or any other related behaviour (insert your favourite forbidden sex act here), will cause natural disasters. I am currently working an in-depth investigation of the Sodom and Gomorrah story. As part of my investigation, I completed a detailed analysis of whether or not God destroyed cities for committing sodomite sins. My findings clearly demonstrate there is zero correlation between sexual sins and the occurrence of calamities/disasters. If you would wish to see more of my findings, please check the following article:

While I was doing research for another post, I came across a piece of particularly entertaining trivia about Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. As it turns out, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were originally developed to stop boys from masturbating. When I read this, I was astounded, how on earth could this even be possible? The more I read about the story behind the corn flakes the more I realized that this was a story worth writing about.

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were invented by John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943). Kellogg was a medical doctor and superintendent of the famous hospital and health spa in Battle Creek, Michigan. Kellogg’s health spa stressed healthy living, and kept his patients on a strict vegetarian diet that eliminated caffeine, meat, alcohol, and tobacco.

Kellogg was a strong advocate of sexual abstinence. Kellogg thought sex was the ultimate evil and remained celibate even in marriage. Kellogg was influenced by current medical opinion sexually transmitted disease as well those taught by his religious and spiritual mentor, Ellen White of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Kellogg’s views on sex can be found in one of his large books under the name of Plain Facts for Old and Young. Kellogg’s book was first published in 1877 and was reprinted in various editions until 1920. Since Kellogg’s books on sex were widely read throughout the United States many of his opinions found their way into the public psyche for years to come.

Kellogg believed that most types of sexual activity were against nature and extremely unhealthy. Kellogg was particularly zealous in his views regarding masturbation arguing that “if illicit commerce of the sexes is a heinous sin, self-pollution, or masturbation, is a crime doubly abominable. As a sin against nature, it has no parallel except in sodomy. It is the most dangerous of all sexual abuses because it is the most extensively practiced.” Kellogg drew upon some rather dubious medical research to back up his claims. For example, he cited a Dr. Adam Clarke who claimed that “neither the plague, nor war, nor small-pox, nor similar diseases, have produced results so disastrous to humanity as the pernicious habit of onanism; it is the destroying clement of civilized societies, which is constantly in action, and gradually undermines the health of a nation.”

Based on this dubious medical research, Kellogg argued that masturbation was the cause of numerous diseases in both men and women. The following is a list of diseases and ailments that Kellogg attributed to masturbation for each gender:

Males:

Urethral Irritation

Inflammation and selling of the urethra

Enlarged Prostate

Urinary Diseases

Piles

Irritation of the ejaculatory ducts

Atrophy of the Testicles

Sterility

Impotence

Nervous exhaustion

General debility

Heart disease

Throat infections

Epilepsy

Nervous Diseases

Dimness of vision (blindness) or seeing spots before the eyes

Spinal irritation

Insanity

Dwarfism

Females:

Inflammation of the membrane lining the vagina

Uterine disease

Cancer of the womb

Sterility

Shrinking of the breasts

Severe itching of the genitals

Hysteria

Epilepsy

His list is unusually long indeed and seems to cover every ailment and disease known to man except for hairy palms! Kellogg devised all kinds of remedies for masturbators which sometimes employed extreme measures that included physical mutilation. For example, he argued that circumcising young boys would be an effective means of stopping them from masturbating. Kellogg further elaborated on circumcision’s effectiveness by arguing:

A remedy which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision, especially when there is any degree of phimosis. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment, as it may well be in some cases. The soreness which continues for several weeks interrupts the practice, and if it had not previously become too firmly fixed, it may be forgotten and not resumed.

And for females:

The author has found the application of pure carbolic acid to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement.

Since Kellogg was also an advocate for healthy living and vegetarianism, he believed there was a strong connection between diet and chastity. For example, Kellogg argued that if a person eats a lot of meat, sugar, bread, tea, coffee and smokes that it would be nearly impossible to stay chaste. In his Plain Facts for Old and Young, he wrote:

Exciting stimulants and condiments weaken and irritate his nerves and derange the circulation. Thus, indirectly, they affect the sexual system, which suffers through sympathy with the other organs. Flesh, condiments, eggs, tea, coffee, chocolate, and all stimulants, have a powerful influence directly upon the reproductive organs. They increase the local supply of blood, and the passions are aroused.

As part of his strict vegetarian diet regime, Kellogg served his patients meals dull in taste to discourage masturbation and other extreme sexual appetites. Most meals consisted of whole wheat, rice, oats and corn dishes. Kellogg believed that most people’s health problems started in the bowels. Kellogg’s solution was a strict vegetarian diet combined with an abundance of fiber and water would help to cleanse impurities and calm the body’s sexual passions.

While caring for his patients at his Health Spa, Kellogg accidentally overcooked a batch of corn, making them stale. Not wanting to throw the batch out, Kellogg processed the batch anyways. However, the batched formed into flakes rather than the desired dough sheets. When Kellogg fed the tasty corn flakes to his patients, they turned out to be quite a hit. Kellogg felt his new cereal would be the perfect addition to his vegetarian diet regime helping to discourage the scourge of masturbation and other sexual excesses.

Together with his brother, Will Kellogg, the delicious cereal propelled the two men into big business. The corn flakes were originally named Granose which were registered for a patent in 1894. Though, it was not until 1906 that the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes that we are all familiar with were made available to the general public.

So there you have it, Corn Flakes, the cure for your wandering hands! While, Kellogg helped to invent a delicious breakfast cereal that generations have enjoyed, his medical quackery has unfortunately, implanted many sexual phobias into the public consciousness that we today are still trying to overcome.

Fucking is an Austrian village located 33 km north of Salzburg and four km east of the German border in Upper Austria. Apparently, the Fucking village has been in existence since at least 1070 AD and is named after a man from the 6th century called Focko. The “ing” is an old German suffix indicating there are people attached to the root word; thus Fucking means place of Focko’s people. It seems the local inhabitants have been doing a pretty good job of living up to their namesake all these years as the Fucking village has a population of 107 inhabitants.

The Fucking village’s most famous feature is a traffic sign with its name on it, beside which tourists often stop to have their photograph taken. As one can well imagine the Fucking traffic sign is commonly stolen. The municipal authorities have had to spend significant amounts of Fucking money to replace the stolen signs.

In response to the frequent sign thefts, the Fucking residents held a plebiscite in 2004 on weather to change the village’s name. However the residents voted against doing so. According to the Fucking mayor, Siegfried Hauppl:

We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, Fucking has existed for 800 years, probably when a Mr Fuck or the Fuck family moved into the area. The ‘ing’ was added as a word for settlement.

In August 2005, the road signs were replaced with theft-resistant sign welded to steel and secured in concrete to prevent further chances of the sign being stolen. It appears that the new theft-resistant signs have solved the Fucking problem as few thefts have occurred since.

Anecdotes and Trivia will be a series of posts that will look at strange, bizarre and unusual tidbits that occured throughout the history of sex. I will be scouring the archives in search of nuggets that should hopefully delight and amuse us all.

As Europe descended into the chaos of the Dark Ages during the 7thCentury the Catholic Church was often preoccupied with challenges of the day. In a world where marauding barbarian hordes were everywhere and civilization was collapsing all around you it was comforting to know that the Catholic Church was on the job ensuring that homosexuality never got out of hand. Around 650 A.D. the Cummean Penitential was issued to parish priests to be used a guidebook in doling out penances to guilty parishioners during confessionals. Homosexual sins were treated as follows:

Kissing – Offenders under 20 years of age:

Simple kissing – 6 special fasts

Licentious kissing without emission – 8 special fasts

Kissing with emission or embrace – 10 special fasts

Kissing – Offenders over 20 years of age:

No special distinction made. The guilty party was to live in continence, eat separately (on bread and water) to be excluded from church; the length of which was presumably at the discretion of the confessor.

Mutual Masturbation – Offenders over 20 years of age:

20-40 days penance for first offense

100 days penance for second offense

If habitual the persons concerned are to be separated and do penance for a year.

Interfemoral Connection – Insertion of the penis between the thighs of the passive partner:

100 days penance for the first offense

1 year penance for second offense

Fellatio – Oral intercourse

4 years penance for first offense

7 years penance for second offense

Sodomy – Anal intercourse

7 years penance for any offense
